Thomas Merlot

In 2018, we planted just under one acre of Merlot at TFV. Merlot thrives in the clay soils of St. Emilion, which are similar to the clay-heavy soils found in Carneros. Although Carneros is mainly known for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, there is actually a long history of Bordeaux varietals being planted here as well. We wanted to pay tribute to this heritage with our own Merlot. The resulting wine is a Bordeaux with a Pinot Noir sensibility and is focused on elegance and balance as opposed to power.

TFV

Originally planted in 1974 by Thomas Ferguson, this ranch officially became part of the Donum portfolio in 2016, though we had sourced fruit from this site for our Carneros Estate Pinot Noir during the 2000s. Following a complete vineyard redevelopment, we harvested our first fruit from this property in 2021. Just a mile away from our Estate, TFV stands out for its rocky terrain, scattered with large cobblestones, and its lighter-colored, silica-rich soils. These conditions make it one of the most unique sites in Carneros for both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
